Marti MacGibbon is a national advocate for human trafficking victims and survivors. She is also an advocate for those who suffer from mental illness and/or the disease of addiction. As a professional inspirational speaker, an internationally known author, and an expert on trauma resolution and addiction who is also an experiential expert, Marti works to inform and support professionals who work with affected populations. Ms. MacGibbon presented at the South Bay Coalition to End Human Trafficking 2017 Conference, as a panelist on the “Intersection Between the Drug Industry and Human Trafficking” and she addressed the use of drug addiction as a form of coercion — one of the elements required to successfully prove an adult has been a human trafficking victim during prosecution of an exploiter. As a member of the panel, Marti presented along with prosecuting attorneys and one law enforcement expert. As a certified addiction treatment professional, Ms. MacGibbon provided important facts about how the disease of addiction affects the brain and increase a person’s vulnerability to being exploited, trafficked, and coerced. Attendees received copies of an article co-authored by Marti MacGibbon, CADC-II, ACRPS, along with Hanni Stoklosa, MD, and Joseph Stoklosa, MD. The article was published in the AMA Journal of Ethics on January 1st, 2017 and is entitled, “Human Trafficking, Mental Illness, and Addiction: Avoiding Diagnostic Overshadowing.”
